NOTES:

We began with a time of fellowship around some thematic snacks (Fig Newtons and animal crackers) in order to relax and get to know each other before we got down to business.

The study started with an overview of the reason why Carissa and Dan chose the topic. We then passed out a handout with a timeline of when most of the non-canonical texts were thought to have been written. We then discussed the adoption of the Jewish canon (approx. 100 AD) and what it contained (basically the OT), the (Protestant) Christian Bible and who canonized it (a group of bishops approx. 375 AD at a synod convened during the rule of Constantine in Rome), and the Bible's translation into English by King James (1611 AD).

After the general overview, Dan gave a brief background to the books we would discuss tonight:


We then began the discussion with the question: What passages struck you as being very similar or drastically different from the [creation story in the] Bible?


After our discussion of the above topics and their what they mean to our faith, Dan offered three concluding thoughts. These are some additional themes from the readings that we didn't have time to cover in-depth.
